Kilmore Care of Creation: Tiny Forests Initiative Update
The Kilmore Care of Creation Group was one of twenty local community groups who participated in the County Cavan Local Development LEADER funded initiative Tiny Forest Celebration Walk in Killykeen on Saturday 4 July 2026.
Members from the Kilmore Care of Creation Group are pictured receiving their Tiny Forest signs from Roisin Grimes, Ecologist and Daniel Monaghan, Forester and Education Specialist. The two tiny forests were planted by the group members, parishioners and local volunteers on Kilmore Diocesan land adjoining the Conaty Centre, Cavan and at Urney Church of Ireland, Cavan.

Tiny Forests are dense, native woodlands consisting of native trees ranging from Oak, Blackthorn, Whitethorn, Holly, Dogrose, Birch, Willow, Alder, Rowan, Hazel, Spindle and Gelder Rose. Packed into small 25m² urban spaces, the Miyawaki Tiny Forests rapidly boosts biodiversity, fights climate change, and reconnects people with nature. The mix of native trees provide significant environmental, health, and community benefits in as little as three years.
A relaxed guided walk through the mature forestry was a lovely way to round off the project together. Groups had the opportunity to see what their own planted Tiny Forests will look like when they reach maturity.
The immersive nature-based ‘talk and walk’ covered everything from native wildflowers and trees to their evolutionary timeline, energy capture and storage, resource gathering, symbiotic relationships, seasonal cycles, genetics and memory to specific native species, propagation, localised patterns, dispersal methods, health and wellbeing, place and economics.
It is with eyes, hearts and minds that we are able to experience and bear witness to the connectedness and interconnectedness of all things.
The Kilmore Care of Creation Group would like to thank everyone who helped out with their two projects.
