Diocesan John Paul II Awards 2015
POPE JOHN PAUL II AWARDS PRESENTED IN THE DIOCESE OF KILMORE
55 young people from across the diocese of Kilmore were recently presented with their Pope John Paul II Awards at a special ceremony in the Chapel of the Diocesan Pastoral Centre in Cavan by Cardinal Seán Brady, Archbishop-Emeritus of Armagh, a native of the diocese.
Three young people received bronze awards; ten received silver awards; thirty-nine received gold awards; and a further three received the Papal Cross award. The award winners came from eight parishes, nine second-level schools and one third-level institution in the diocese, as well as three parishes from adjoining dioceses.
The Director of the Diocesan Pastoral Centre, Seán Coll, welcomed all present to the fourth annual presentation ceremony in Kilmore. He said that the event was one of celebration, of thanksgiving, and of recognition. Addressing the award winners, he said, “We rejoice with you today and we thank you for the commitment to your faith and your community which you have demonstrated through your participation in these awards.”
The Bishop of Kilmore, Most Reverend Leo O’Reilly, presided at the ceremony and is patron of the awards in the diocese. He reiterated that the purpose of the Awards was to enable young people to live their faith and to witness to that faith within the context of the parish community. He joined in congratulating all the award winners and commending those who co-ordinated the awards at either parish or school level throughout the diocese. He also thanked the Knights of St. Columbanus for their support of the Awards at diocesan and national level.
In his remarks, Cardinal Brady congratulated the young people receiving their awards and he thanked them for their generosity of spirit in getting involved in such a concrete way in the life of their Church and community. He also thanked the Knights of St. Columbanus for supporting the award initiative.
Barry MacMahon, Supreme Knight of the Knights of St. Columbanus, told those gathered for the ceremony that it was an honour and privilege for him to be present at the ceremony and commended the young people present for taking such an active role in the life of their Church, in the life of their community and society
Also present at the awards ceremony were Owen Keogh, Provincial Grand Knight; Philip Lynch, the local Grand Knight, as well as other members of the Cavan Council.
Refreshments were served afterwards in the Drumlane Room of the Diocesan Pastoral Centre.
