Diocese to be represented at Katholikentag 2026 in Wurzburg
German Catholic Conventions (Katholikentag) are major events with over 170 years of tradition. They take place every two years – each time in a different city. For five days, tens of thousands of Catholics and believers of all denominations and many religions from Germany, Europe and the world come together to pray, discuss and celebrate. Church services, large and small podiums, workshops, concerts, exhibitions, theatre and much more await the visitors.
The Diocese of Wurzburg (with whom the Kilmore Diocese has very close connections through St Kilian) is the host diocese for the Katholikentag event from 13 to 17 May 2026.
The motto for the 2026 Katholikentag is “Take Courage … Stand Up”.
An invitation has been extended by the Diocese of Wurzburg to the Diocese of Kilmore to attend this year’s event which has been gratefully accepted. The diocese will be represented by
- Martina Gilmartin, Director of Pastoral Development & Faith Formation with responsibility for Youth & Young Adult Ministry;
- Seán Coll, Director of Kilmore Diocesan Pastoral Centre;
- Bronagh Prunty, Lay Pastoral Ministry Trainee, member of the Kilmore Synodality Group and member of the Kilmore Diocesan Pastoral Council;
- Leanne Fitz-Ledwith, Diocesan Youth Leadership Team; and
- Fr Paul Prior, Parish Priest of Mullagh and Diocesan Secretary.
Katholikentag is a reflection of life in the Church. They bring together people of all generations, from all parts of Germany and further afield. Experiencing faith in community as something alive, actively shaping the future and drawing new strength for everyday life – that is the main focus for the participants. At the same time, German Catholic Conventions are a place where Catholics face the political and social challenges of their time and look for ways to shape the world out of their faith. Many impulses for society and the Church come from Katholikentag.
It is planned to post a daily update by the Kilmore delegation on the diocesan Facebook page (Diocese of Kilmore).
