Let’s Clean Up Our Act! – A Message from Kilmore Care of Creation:
KILMORE CARE OF CREATION
Inspired by LAUDATO SI’, the Encyclical Letter written by Pope Francis ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME
Let’s Clean Up Our Act!
“The Earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth!
Each year hundreds of millions of tons of waste are generated, much of it non-biodegradable, highly toxic and radioactive, from homes and businesses, from construction and demolition sites, from clinical, electronic and industrial sources” (Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ Encyclical LS21).
Sacred Scripture tells us that “the earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it” (Psalm 24:1)… “All things were created through him and for him” (Col. 1:15-16). The very act of caring for the environment demonstrates the two greatest commandments of all: “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength and you must love your neighbour as yourself” (Mark 12:29-31).
According to Ireland’s National Waste Policy, there are nine broad categories of litter:
- cigarettes
- packaging
- food
- sweet
- paper
- plastic litter (e.g. toys)
- harmful litter (dog fouling, nappies, needles, syringes)
- large items (household appliances, furniture)
- miscellaneous (e.g. twine, clothes, fabrics)
“Litter can pose serious health issues for people. It harms wildlife and spoils the beauty of a place. It invites indifference, more litter and even crime. Someone should be doing something, right? But, why you? www.arocha.org ‘Litter Clean Up 2020’
Here are some good reasons:
- It’s a practical way of caring for God, people, wildlife, plants and the planet
- It can lead to all kinds of other actions that yield more permanent solutions;
Make a conscious choice on how you dispose of your litter!
