Return to Nature Presentation at St. Michael’s National School, Glenfarne
On 6th August last, Rebeccah Cogan, Biodiversity Officer for Leitrim County Council, visited St. Michael’s National School, Glenfarne, to deliver an engaging and informative Return to Nature presentation. .
The event opened with a reflective and inspiring prayer from Laudato Si’, led by Fr. Oliver Kelly. Rebeccah then addressed the assembled members of the parish and local community, sharing practical and impactful ways to support biodiversity. Her presentation included valuable guidance on creating pollinator-friendly gardens, establishing tree nurseries, and encouraging the development of natural habitats.
Rebeccah generously provided a variety of resources to support local biodiversity efforts. These included signage for pollinator awareness and mowing schedules, as well as informative booklets for attendees to take home.
Following the presentation, a short tour of the grounds of St. Michael’s Church took place. Attendees had the opportunity to view the recently seeded wildflower garden and visit the garden at the parochial house.
Looking ahead, a visit from a Leitrim County Council ecologist will be arranged to assess church lands and graveyard sites within the parish. The assessment will focus on identifying areas for biodiversity enhancement and recommending practical actions such as planting native species and creating wildlife habitats.
Once the ecologist’s report is complete, Rebeccah will continue to support the parish by providing further resources, training, tools, and expert guidance to help implement the recommendations.
Fr. Oliver Kelly, the Glenfarne Care of Creation Group, and all attending members of the parish and local community would like to extend their thanks to Rebeccah Cogan and Leitrim County Council for their generous time, expertise, and resources. They look forward to continued collaboration in the shared mission of protecting and enhancing biodiversity within the parish.
